Ruta del Cares: the trail through the gorge

Between the Western and Central Massifs, from Poncebos in Asturias to Caín in León.

According to the ministry, the Ruta del Cares is the best-known trail in Picos de Europa National Park. It follows the Cares river through the gorge between the Western and Central Massifs, from Poncebos in Asturias to Caín in León. The path was built with the water channel that has supplied the Camarmeña power station since 1916, and in many places it is cut into the rock.

If you do not want to walk there and back, you need a car or a pick-up at the other end: there is no road through the gorge between Poncebos and Caín. The ministry also describes the long version from Posada de Valdeón, 21 km (13 mi).

It is a mountain path with loose stones. On Friday, 31 July 2026, two hikers were seriously injured by falling rock, according to the press; the park authority closed the route and reopened it on 2 August 2026, warning that rockfall remains possible at any time in this karst massif.

01Good to know: rockfall, drops, water

What the park authority and the ministry advise.

Drops without railings

According to the ministry, the trail between Caín and Poncebos runs along a drop without side protection. Mountain boots are a must.

MITECO/OAPN: PR-PNPE 3 Ruta del Cares (21 km from Posada de Valdeón) ↗

Rockfall

Frost constantly breaks off stones in the karst massif, and roots or grazing animals can send them falling from hundreds of metres up. According to the park authority, you walk the trail on your own responsibility.

Park authority: Ruta del Cares reopened after the rockfall (notice of 2 August 2026) ↗

No drinking water

There is no drinking water along the route; carry enough water.

MITECO/OAPN: PR-PNPE 3 Ruta del Cares (21 km from Posada de Valdeón) ↗

No bikes

Cycling is banned on the Ruta del Cares because cyclists could push walkers over the edge.

Park authority: plan your visit (camping, fire, dogs, drones, overflights, swimming, cycling, refuges) ↗

Two sources, one notice

On 9 Oct 2026 the regional government's tourism site still showed a notice about a precautionary closure. The park authority reopened the route on 2 August 2026; check its current notices before you set off.
