National Parks in Montenegro

Five national parks, one authority, one annual pass. Durmitor costs five euros a day, and an increase has been proposed that many travel sites already list as decided.

Montenegro has five national parks: Durmitor, Biogradska Gora, Lovćen, Skadarsko Jezero and Prokletije, all run by the same authority and covered by the same annual pass. This atlas starts with Durmitor National Park near Žabljak, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, with around fifty peaks over 2,000 m, the glacial Black Lake and the Tara Canyon.

The guide covers the fee in force, the proposed increase and the services the park authority runs itself, from mountain guides to huts, each linked to the national park authority and UNESCO.

Durmitor: €5 a day

Entry to Durmitor costs €5 per person per day according to the park authority's price list, including the visitor centre and nature trails. Parking is extra, €1 per hour for a car. Children up to 15 pay no entrance fee in any of the five national parks.

The proposed increase

In early September 2026 the park authority proposed raising the Durmitor fee to €8 in June, July and August and to €6 for the rest of the year. When we checked on 25 September 2026 the price list still showed €5. Many travel sites already give €8 as the fee in force; that is the proposal, not the tariff.

The annual pass

For €13.50 you can buy an annual pass valid without limit in 2026 in Durmitor, Biogradska Gora, Lovćen, Skadarsko Jezero and Prokletije. It pays off from your third day in a park. It is sold at the ticket offices in the parks, at the office in Podgorica and online.

Services of the park authority

At Durmitor, the authority itself runs guided drives around the Durmitor Ring (€20 per person by minibus, €30 by off-road vehicle, park entry included), arranges mountain guides for Bobotov Kuk (€80 for eight hours) and rents beds in the Sušica hut (€10 per person per night), tent pitches (€3) and serviced campsites (€20 per day).

For hiking, June to August: exactly the months the park authority calls the main season and proposes to make more expensive. If you want to avoid the crowds, come in September. In winter Žabljak is a ski resort.

The Tara Canyon, which UNESCO describes as the deepest in Europe, is part of the national park and of the Tara River Basin Biosphere Reserve. Of the glacial lakes, the Black Lake near Žabljak is the best known. Bobotov Kuk, at 2,525 m (8,284 ft) according to UNESCO, is the highest of around fifty peaks over 2,000 m in the massif. A road crosses the massif over the Sedlo pass at 1,907 m (6,257 ft), where the path to Sedlena Greda starts. UNESCO names brown bear, wolf and wildcat among the park's mammals, and 130 bird species including golden eagle and capercaillie.

You can stay in the town of Žabljak or with the park authority itself, in the Sušica hut or on its campsites.
