2. Website and hosting

We operate this website with Mittwald CM Service GmbH & Co. KG, Königsberger Straße 4–6, 32339 Espelkamp, Germany. When the website is accessed, the following in particular are processed: IP address, time, requested URL, status code, amount of data, browser information and, where applicable, the referring page. This enables the delivery, error analysis and security of the website. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; our legitimate interest is the reliable and secure operation of the website.

Mittwald processes hosting data on our behalf. According to Mittwald's information on log files, IP addresses in access logs are truncated and these logs are retained for 60 days; error logs are deleted after seven days. Information about the provider: Mittwald privacy policy.

3. Maps

Pages with maps load map images from tile.openstreetmap.org. In doing so, the map service receives your IP address and technical connection data, such as the requested map sections and browser information. The provider is the OpenStreetMap Foundation in the United Kingdom. Delivery may take place via its international server network and the service provider Fastly. Our website does not request access to your device location.

The integration serves spatial orientation and travel planning. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; our legitimate interest is a clear geographical presentation. Information on recipients, retention periods, countries of processing and your rights with the map service can be found in the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy and its notes for map users.

Park map pages (3D terrain). Each park has its own map page (the address ends in “/map”). The MapLibre map library is hosted on our own hosting. When you open a map page, your browser loads map tiles, label fonts and map symbols from OpenFreeMap, as well as elevation data for the terrain from the “Terrain Tiles” dataset at Amazon Web Services. In doing so, both providers receive your IP address and technical connection data such as the requested map sections, browser information and the referring page.

OpenFreeMap is operated by Hyperknot Software Kft., Petőfi Sándor utca 48., 2724 Újlengyel, Hungary. According to its information, IP addresses are not stored in the regular server logs; only in the event of a security incident or abuse can IP logging be switched on temporarily, for a maximum of 30 days. OpenFreeMap may use Cloudflare as a content delivery network; a transfer to the USA is possible in this context. Details: OpenFreeMap privacy policy.

The elevation data is held in the S3 storage service of Amazon Web Services, Inc. (USA) as part of the “Registry of Open Data on AWS”. A transfer to the USA takes place; according to its own information, Amazon Web Services participates in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Information about the dataset: Terrain Tiles.

The map pages serve spatial orientation before and during a park visit. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; our legitimate interest is a clear, terrain-accurate presentation of the verified places. If you do not wish to use these services, you can also find all places with a description and evidence of their location without a map on the park and place pages.

Our GetYourGuide links labelled as advertising contain a partner and campaign identifier. This identifies us and the placement of the offer, not you as a person. Your browser only connects to GetYourGuide once you open the link. The GetYourGuide privacy information then applies there, in particular regarding the booking and the attribution of a referral. We receive partner reports for performance measurement and billing. The legal basis for our processing is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our interest in funding and evaluating the referred offers. Billing records are retained in accordance with the applicable statutory retention obligations. The same applies to our Tiqets links labelled as advertising: they contain a partner identifier, and when you open them the Tiqets privacy policy applies. Likewise for our Viator links labelled as advertising: they contain a partner and campaign identifier; when you open them the Viator privacy policy applies (Viator, Inc., a Tripadvisor company).

No tracking script from GetYourGuide, Tiqets or Viator is embedded on National Parks Atlas. Click counters in the page script exist only in working memory for the duration of the respective page view and are not sent to us. External route planners and accommodation websites are likewise only accessed when you open their links.

5. Embedded videos (YouTube)

On many park pages we show films by park authorities and other channels that are published on YouTube. The provider of YouTube is Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. No connection to YouTube is established when a page is opened: initially only a preview image is shown, which is stored on our own hosting.

Only when you click “Play film” does your browser load the player via youtube-nocookie.com and other Google servers. In doing so, Google receives your IP address, technical connection and browser data, and the address of the page on which you start the film. YouTube may also store or read information on your device, for example in the browser's local storage, and associate the playback with your Google account if you are signed in there. A transfer to Google LLC in the USA is possible; Google LLC is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

The legal basis is your consent, which you give by clicking (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, Section 25(1) of the German Telecommunications Digital Services Data Protection Act (TDDDG)). It applies only to the respective film and the current page view and is not stored; on your next visit the preview image appears again. Alternatively, you can open the film on YouTube itself via “Watch directly on YouTube”. Details on processing by Google can be found in the Google privacy policy.

6. Search statistics and local files

We use Google Search Console to evaluate the visibility of our website in Google Search. No Google Analytics or Tag Manager script is run on this website for this purpose. The proof of ownership does not send any visitor data. Images, film preview images, stylesheets, fonts and the map library are loaded from our own hosting. No external font service is accessed.

7. Travel plan “My visit”

On park pages with a Field book, you can save stops for your visit, distribute them across days and add notes. Initially, this plan is stored only in your browser's local storage and is not transmitted to us. The storage is strictly necessary for the function you have expressly requested (Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). You can remove the plan at any time via “Delete plan” or by deleting the website data in your browser. When shared via a link, the plan is contained in the link itself; notes only if you select this.

On this website, the plan is not stored on our servers.

8. Contacting us

If you contact us by email or phone, we process your contact details and the content in order to handle your enquiry. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR for contract-related matters, otherwise Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR based on our interest in responding. We delete the data as soon as the matter has been dealt with, unless statutory retention obligations or the need to establish or defend legal claims prevent this.

9. Your rights

In accordance with the GDPR, you have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability. Where processing is based on consent, you can withdraw it with effect for the future. You can lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

Where processing is based on legitimate interests, you may object on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21 GDPR). Please send your request to the contact address given above. No automated decision-making with legal or similarly significant effects takes place on this website.

If you are in the United Kingdom, you have the same rights under the UK GDPR and can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk ↗). If you are in the United States: we do not sell personal information, do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising and do not use it for profiling. Once you follow a partner link, GetYourGuide, Viator or Tiqets process your data under their own privacy policies.
