Waterfalls, riverside trails and boat trips to the places along the Krka.
First momentAt Skradinski buk the Krka and Čikola fall together over seventeen tufa steps, 45.7 metres (150 ft) over a length of 800 metres. It is the last of the seven waterfalls.
Including its drowned estuary, the Krka is 72.5 km (45 mi) long. It rises 3.5 km (2.2 mi) north-east of Knin at the foot of Dinara and descends a total of 224 m (735 ft) over seven waterfalls. The national park covers its most beautiful stretches and the lower course of the Čikola across 109 km² (42 sq mi).
For the first 49 km (30 mi) the Krka's water is completely fresh; over the last 23.5 km (14.6 mi) the influence of the sea can be felt. It does not sink away in the dry karst, because it flows above the level of the underground karst water. At Skradinski buk it carries on average 55 m³ of water per second, at the source 12 m³.
On 24 January 1985 the parliament of the Socialist Republic of Croatia declared 142 km² (55 sq mi) between the Trošenj and Nečven fortresses and the Šibenik bridge a national park. In 1997 the boundaries were redrawn: today the park begins upstream of the Skradin bridge and reaches almost to Knin.
The ticket for the whole park is valid on the same day for Skradinski buk and all sites on land, but for each only once: if you reach Skradinski buk via Lozovac, you cannot go back later by boat from Skradin, and vice versa. The ticket for Roški slap, Manojlovac, Burnum, the Puljane Eco-Campus and Krka – vrelo života does not include Skradinski buk.

The Krka's longest tufa barrier. A 1.9-kilometre (1.2 mi) loop trail leads over bridges and steps through the cascades; on the bank stand old mills and the remains of the power plant that supplied Šibenik with electricity in 1895.
Krka National Park: landscape and how the waterfalls formed
What makes the park special, sourced from the park authority's information.
Krka is a river park. Over long periods, the river that gives it its name has built up tufa barriers, over which it falls in steps.
Tufa, also called travertine, forms where water containing dissolved calcium bicarbonate tumbles over rapids, uneven surfaces or submerged branches. The splashing releases carbon dioxide, the chemical balance tips, and calcium carbonate settles as tiny crystals on the surfaces the water flows over.
For the barriers to grow, the water must be very hard, with little dissolved organic matter and a pH above 8. Higher temperatures and a flow speed of between 0.5 and 3.5 metres per second speed up the process. Micro-organisms and mosses on the surfaces the water flows over play a key role.
At Skradinski buk, mosses such as Cinclidotus aquaticus and Palustriella commutata form curtains and beards on the vertical steps; on open surfaces Eucladium verticillatum dominates, and the now rare Didymodon tophaceus grows in shallow pools. At the top lie small lakes and islands, at the bottom high barriers where new ridges, caves and overhangs are constantly forming.
On 28 August 1895 Croatia's first complete alternating-current system went into operation at Skradinski buk: the power plant, 11 km (6.8 mi) of 3-kilovolt line on wooden poles and the street lighting of Šibenik. Later mills, a pasta factory, theatres, cafés, hotels and the first households were connected; operation ceased in 1913.
Krka National Park: two hours with a guide around Skradinski buk
Guided tour from the main Lozovac entrance: the park shuttle bus takes you down to Skradinski buk in about five minutes, then you walk about two kilometres over boardwalks and paths to the cascades, the old watermills and the ethnographic collection. Afterwards there is time to explore the park on your own; the shuttle bus takes you back to Lozovac. According to the notes the route has about 70 steps, and elsewhere about 200, and it is not suitable for wheelchairs. Guests buy their park tickets themselves at the entrance. The list of inclusions includes the shuttle bus; according to the park authority's price list it is part of the park ticket from April to October.

A small island in Lake Visovac, home to Franciscans since 1445. You can only get there by boat: from Skradinski buk, from Roški slap or on the short crossing from Stinice and Remetić.
A small island in Lake Visovac, a place of prayer for centuries: to the park authority, the monastery, church, island and lake form a natural, cultural and spiritual whole.
The focus of Marian devotion on Visovac is a miraculous image that, according to tradition, the Franciscans brought from Bosnia when fleeing the Ottomans. The oldest evidence of this devotion is a poem by Father Pavle Posilović from 1639.
You reach the island by excursion boat from Skradinski buk or Roški slap, or by the short crossing from Stinice and Remetić. Dogs are not allowed on the island, and the park authority asks for appropriate clothing.
On the feast of Our Lady of the Angels (2 August) and on the Assumption (15 August), Visovac Island is open only to pilgrims; there are no excursions for park visitors on these days.
Because of the tufa barriers, the Krka is navigated in stages: from Skradin to Skradinski buk, from there by excursion boat to Visovac, to Roški slap or along the Čikola to Torak. From Roški slap boats go to Visovac and to the Nečven and Trošenj fortresses. The excursions cost extra; tickets are sold only in the park, and you book on site.
From Sinj: private scenic flight over the Krka waterfalls and Visovac
Private scenic flight for up to three people from Piket airfield in Sinj near Split. The Krka is the first part of the route: over the Krka waterfalls and the monastery on Visovac Island. The flight then continues over the slopes of Velebit to the Plitvice Lakes and back to Sinj, about two hours in all. The page does not say how long or at what altitude the flight stays over the park; no landing or park visit is included, nor is getting to the airfield. The list of inclusions speaks of a helicopter flight over the Krka waterfalls, the description of a private plane; clarify this before booking.

Above Lake Visovac, 35.5 kilometres (22.1 mi) from the source, lies the sixth waterfall of the Krka. It is one of three places in the park where you may swim at designated spots from June to September.
At Roški slap a 1360 m educational loop trail crosses the Ogrlice cascades. Old crafts are demonstrated in the restored mills on the left bank. For summer visits, the park authority asks you to park in Laškovica or Bogatići Miljevački.
8.5 km (5.3 mi) long, with 176 m (577 ft) of height difference from Lake Visovac to the car park, open all year; boards explain plants, animals, geology and history. 517 steps lead up to the cave, and another 99 to the car park in Bogatići Miljevački. Not a loop: plan your return; from June to September a bus runs Laškovica – Roški slap – Bogatići Miljevački – Stinice.
Swimming is allowed only at the designated spots at Roški slap, in Stinice and at Pisak, from 1 June to 30 September, at your own risk and depending on the weather and water level. Outside these spots and times swimming is not allowed; jumping from waterfalls or bridges is prohibited.
Since 1 January 2021 swimming has been banned in the national park, except at the designated bathing spots. The park authority explains that the survival of the Krka and its life depends on the growth of the tufa barriers, and preserving this process is its most important goal.
Upper Krka: Manojlovac waterfall, Burnum and Krka Monastery
At Manojlovac slap, the highest waterfall on the Krka, the river drops almost 60 metres (197 ft). A few hundred metres away stand the arches of Burnum, the camp from which Rome watched over the crossings of the Krka.
There was probably already a military post here against the Delmatae in the first century BC (100–1 BC). Four legions were stationed at Burnum in turn; the XI Legion built the permanent camp, and under Emperor Claudius came its renewal and the amphitheatre. Burnum later became a self-governing town, last mentioned in 536/537.
In the rocky upper course, surrounded by five waterfalls, lies one of the most important spiritual centres of the Orthodox Eparchy of Dalmatia.
Krka Monastery stands on the foundations of an older hermitage and is first mentioned in 1402. Together with the Burnum camp, the park authority counts it among the two special treasures of the upper course; a hiking trail leads around the monastery.
„Roaring cascades, emerald reeds and historic monasteries in the middle of a karst river.“

Wildlife by the river
Three fish species found only in the Krka
31 fish species live in the Krka, 20.7 per cent of those recorded in Croatia. Three are endemic to the Krka: the critically endangered Visovac goby (Knipowitschia mrakovcici) and the endangered Visovac trout (Salmo visovacensis) and softmouth trout (Salmothymus obtusirostris).
With 229 recorded bird species, the park is one of the richest areas for birds in Croatia, both as a stopover for migrants and as a wintering ground. On the water the coot is the most common species. Six birds of prey have disappeared since the middle of the 20th century, including the Egyptian vulture, griffon vulture and golden eagle.
Miljacka II cave is home to the largest known colony of long-fingered bats in Europe, around 7000 animals, plus five other bat species. Otters have been recorded along the whole river; wolf and wildcat, which mostly live in the forests of downy oak and oriental hornbeam, are also strictly protected.
The park rules prohibit breaking off or damaging tufa and moving across the tufa barriers off the marked trails. Camping, fires outside marked places, picking plants and disturbing animals are also prohibited. The park authority also asks for quiet, as noise disturbs visitors and animals alike.
Drones are not allowed in the park, not even briefly or for private use. Canoeing and kayaking on the Krka are also not permitted. Photos and films for personal use are free; promotional filming needs a permit from the park authority.
How to get to Krka: Skradin or Lozovac, and where to stay
Two ways lead to Skradinski buk: from Skradin by park boat or on foot along the bank, and from Lozovac by park bus or down a steep gravel path. There is no accommodation in the park itself.
Nearby · Campsite in Skradin with electricity, water and sanitary facilities. According to the operator about 500 m from the boat pier; no accommodation in the national park.

06Frequently asked questions: Krka National Park
When is Krka National Park open?
The opening hours are in the field book under How to get there and are taken daily from the park authority. The boat from Skradin and the bus from Lozovac, both included in the ticket, are seasonal.
Not in the park itself: there is no accommodation in the national park. Nearby, Camping Skradinske Delicije in Skradin has electricity, water and sanitary facilities, and according to the operator is about 500 m from the boat pier.
Not all the way to Skradinski buk. From Skradin you continue on the footpath and cycle path or by the seasonal park boat; from Lozovac by the seasonal park bus or on foot along an 875 m (0.5 mi) gravel path with a steep descent.
Which is better, Plitvice Lakes or Krka National Park?
It depends on what you want; the Atlas compares both on its Croatia comparison page. One clear difference: at Krka, swimming is allowed at three designated spots, Roški slap, Stinice and Pisak, from 1 June to 30 September and at your own risk. Swimming is not allowed at Skradinski buk.
Only at three designated spots: at Roški slap, in Stinice and at Pisak, from 1 June to 30 September, at your own risk and depending on the weather and water level. Swimming at Skradinski buk is not allowed, and jumping from waterfalls or bridges is prohibited.
Yes. From 1 April to 31 October the park boat between Skradin and Skradinski buk is included in the ticket. Excursion boats to Visovac Island and Roški slap cost extra.
Skradin or Lozovac, but only one of them per day for Skradinski buk: the whole-park ticket is valid for each site only once, so if you arrive via Lozovac you cannot come back later by boat from Skradin, and vice versa.
The main loop is short: the Skradinski buk circular trail is 1.9 km (1.2 mi) long, with bridges and steps, and is walked in a signposted direction. Allow extra time to get there.
