Phi Phi: landscape and origins
No national park in Thailand takes in more, and none has closed a bay so consistently to save it.
In fiscal year 2025 the park authority took in 2,208,128,028 baht across all national parks. Almost a third of it, 648,920,480 baht, came from Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi. The Similan Islands followed in second place with 197,258,000 baht; Phang Nga Bay was sixth with 115,150,150 baht.
Behind the figures is mainly one bay. In 2017, according to the tourism authority, almost 5,000 people a day came to Maya Bay. On 1 June 2018 the park authority closed it for four months; in October 2018 it extended the closure until further notice. Only on 1 January 2022 were visitors allowed back on the beach, after more than three years.
Since then new rules apply: landing only at the back, visiting rounds of one hour, no swimming. And every year in the monsoon the bay stays closed for two months. The park authority measures success by the sharks: it counted 161 blacktip reef sharks during the long closure, and up to 278 on 2 September 2026.
