Þingvellir National Park: landscape and origins

Þingvellir charges no entrance fee. You pay for parking at the assembly site and for individual services.

The fee is not an entrance fee but a charge for the car parks: according to the park, it covers running the car parks P1 Hakið, P2 Efri-Vellir and P5 Valhöll, their upkeep and snow clearing, including the toilets. One ticket is valid at all three on the day of payment.

Cameras at Hakið read the number plates and match them with payments when you leave. You pay at machines in the visitor centre, in the toilet building, at P2 and P5, or online at Checkit.is, which collects the fee on behalf of the park.

The fees are based on rules of the Þingvallanefnd confirmed by the environment ministry on 21 December 2023; they have applied since 1 January 2024. The same rules set ISK 1,500 for every dive in Silfra – tour operators usually include it in their price.

The act of 1928 lays down that Þingvellir shall always be the property of the Icelandic nation under the protection of the Alþing. Since the park was founded in 1930 it has been managed by the Þingvallanefnd (Þingvellir Commission).

Nature: plates, fissures and a lake full of char

Three plates, not two

In Iceland the North American and Eurasian plates meet, together with the Hreppar microplate (Hreppafleki). Silfra lies between the North American plate and the Hreppar microplate.
