Vatnajökull National Park: landscape and origins

Vatnajökull National Park charges no entrance fee. At Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón you pay a regional fee when you park – once a day, the second area at half price.

The regional fee is charged on entry to fee-charging service areas and is valid until midnight. Cameras record the number plate; you pay via Parka, the park's online service provider, or at the machine in the car park.

If you have already paid in full in another area on the same day, you pay half. Holders of a parking card for people with reduced mobility can have their plate exempted in advance by email.

The rates are laid down in Regulation No. 266/2026 of 6 March 2026. In June 2026 the Alþing revised the fee rules for Náttúruverndarstofnun; fees must be set out in a tariff confirmed by the minister.

Location sources: All points are taken from OpenStreetMap and each is referenced by its object number. Checked against the park boundary in OpenStreetMap (relation 6149205, “Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður”): Hof í Öræfum lies about 1.9 km (1.2 mi) outside. The boundary runs right along Fjallsárlón and Dettifoss – both points lie just outside in OpenStreetMap, but the park lists both as its destinations; at Dettifoss the west side belongs to the park according to the drone rules, the east bank is private land. Markers do not imply that access is permitted. Base map © OpenStreetMap contributors. Coastlines of the chapter map: Natural Earth.
