Covadonga Lakes: two lakes and a closed road

Enol and Ercina in the Western Massif, on the CO-4 road up from Covadonga.

The Covadonga Lakes, Lago Enol and Lago de la Ercina, lie in the Western Massif of Picos de Europa National Park, above the sanctuary of Covadonga. On the busiest days the only road up, the CO-4, is closed to private cars around the clock; then you take the bus run by the concessionaire ALSA.

The area is the oldest part of the park: it was already within the Montaña de Covadonga National Park, the first in Spain, in 1918. According to the park authority, the most important terminal moraine in the Picos de Europa lies at the lakes; the old Buferrera mines are right next to it.

The park authority, the regional government and the municipalities set the access rules anew every year. For 2026 they apply from 28 March to 8 December, on set days. On other days you may drive up; if the road jams or the car parks are full, the park authority can close the road as well.
