South Zone: El Calafate

The south holds the Perito Moreno Glacier, Lago Argentino with Upsala and Spegazzini, and Lago Roca. The gateway is El Calafate, outside the park.

Opening hours at the glacier

Only the Corredor Mitre–Moreno has fixed hours: from 1 September to 30 April entry 8:00 to 18:00, stay until 20:00; from 1 May to 31 August 9:00 to 16:00, stay until 18:00.

Perito Moreno walkways

Six trails on walkways and balconies lead to the glacier front, between 150 metres and 1,117 metres long according to the park authority's map. The Sendero Accesible (565 m) is wheelchair accessible.

Rules in Los Glaciares: no dogs, no drones, fires only where permitted

Keep your distance from the ice front

Falling ice throws splinters dozens of metres. On the walkways never climb over railings or barriers, and hold the handrail on the steps.

How to get there: fly to El Calafate, bus to El Chaltén

To the glacier: 80 kilometres

From El Calafate it is about 80 km (50 mi) on the paved RP 11 to the walkways. Scheduled buses leave from the bus station; alternatives are hire cars, remises (private cars with driver) and guided tours.

On the ice: Minitrekking

According to the park authority, the ice treks on the Perito Moreno are run by the concessionaire Hielo y Aventura. On the Minitrekking you spend about one hour on the ice in crampons; it is open to ages 8 to 65, the longer Big Ice to ages 18 to 50.

In the north, the trails to Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre start right in El Chaltén. The park authority calls it Argentina's trekking capital.

The park administration is in El Calafate, Av. Libertador 1302; in the north, the Ceferino Fonzo visitor centre at the entrance to El Chaltén is the place to go.

El Chaltén charges entry too

The park authority's fee annex lists the North Zone with the El Chaltén portal as a separate line, with the same amounts as the south. According to the park authority, the checkpoints are Los Cóndores, Cerro Torre/Base Fitz Roy and Río Eléctrico.
