Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa): the highest mountain in Wales
Six paths, one railway – and over 600,000 people a year.
Snowdon, Yr Wyddfa in Welsh, is the highest mountain in Snowdonia National Park (Eryri) and, at 1,085 metres (3,560 ft), the highest point in Wales. According to the National Park Authority over 600,000 people climb it every year, making it one of the busiest mountains in Britain.
Six paths lead to the summit from all sides, all graded hard. Since 1896 the private Snowdon Mountain Railway has run up from Llanberis to the summit building Hafod Eryri.
Paths and summit are free. You pay for parking, bus and railway – and until 1 November 2026 the Pen y Pass car park must be booked in advance.
