Devil's Pool: swimming where the Zambezi plunges into the gorge
On Livingstone Island, right on the edge of Victoria Falls.
Devil's Pool is a rock pool on the lip of Victoria Falls, at the edge of Livingstone Island in Zambia's Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. The only way across is with the island operator, Green Safaris: by boat from the jetty near the Royal Livingstone Hotel, about ten minutes across the Zambezi, or from September to December on foot across the exposed rocks.
Swimming happens only when the water level allows it. The operator usually opens Devil's Pool from late August to late December; from January to late August, when the Zambezi is high, guests swim in Angel's Pool or Rock Pool. The island itself is open eleven to twelve months a year.
Every tour combines a guided walk around the island with a meal: a morning Breezer, lunch or high tea. No more than 32 guests are on the island per tour.
