The Jenner cable car: up to the park boundary

The cable car ends where the national park begins.

The Jenner cable car (Jennerbahn) runs from Schönau on Lake Königssee to the top station at 1,800 m (5,906 ft). A return trip costs €47.00 for adults and €28.00 for young people aged 6 to 17. If you ride from 15:00, you pay €37.00 or €24.00.

Its location is remarkably precise: a point-in-polygon check against the OpenStreetMap boundary of Berchtesgaden National Park places the middle station, the top station and even the Jenner summit node outside the protected area. Just 200 m (656 ft) west of the summit you are inside it. So the cable car ends right at the park boundary: the view looks in, the facilities stand just outside.

Right there, the national park authority runs its highest information point. The exhibition "This is the summit" in the top station shows rock as a habitat, with animal furs to touch, screens with nature games and discovery panels. Entry is free.

If Lake Königssee is on your plan anyway, look at the lake-and-summit ticket (See-Gipfel-Ticket): it combines the boat trip to St. Bartholomä with a full return trip on the cable car for €56.00 and can only be booked with the Königssee boat service.

Hike up the Jenner from Hinterbrand

Start: the Hinterbrand car park; finish: the Jenner summit. The path runs through the forest to the middle station, along the forest road towards the Königsbachalm, left at the Wasserfall-Alm to the Mitterkaseralm and up the former ski run to the top station, then on a narrower path to the summit. 6.2 km (3.9 mi), 742 m (2,434 ft) up and 84 m (276 ft) down, about 3 hours; the tourism board rates it moderate. Ride the cable car down to spare your knees.

Follow the Königsweg towards the Königsbachalm, climb steeply at the Steinernes Bankerl to the Königsbergalm pasture, then either zigzag up the Blitzweg to the top station or take the main path to the Schneibsteinhaus and over the saddle. 6.3 km (3.9 mi), 637 m (2,090 ft) up and 41 m (135 ft) down, about 2:30 hours, moderate. Ride the cable car back to the valley.
